BRANCH MEETING MINUTES – December 12, 2016

AAUW MANHATTAN BRANCH MEETING MINUTES
DECEMBER 12, 2016
Trinity Presbyterian Church on College Avenue, 6:00 p.m.

Meeting: The meeting was called to order by President, Karen Tinkler.

Presidents Report:  Karen Tinkler shared a letter with the membership that she received from Patricia Fae Ho, the Chairman of the board of AAUW.  She wrote to thank the branch members for their efforts in helping to empower women.  Seventeen trailblazing women came together 135 years ago to organize a community of women.  They fought for and obtained a higher education. This became the basis of the AAUW.

Please read the upcoming Newsletter.  It reflects on some of the milestones achieved by women over the past year.  One achievement is that the first Native American Woman was confirmed as a US District Court judge.  Also the first female and African American is now Chief Librarian of the Library of Congress. There will be twenty-one women serving in the U.S. Senate – the highest number ever.  We’ve come a long was baby!

In January we will host our second AAUW sign up day for potential members.

AAUW Funds: Joan Strickler passed the basket around for the AAUW Funds that are collected once a year.  She explained what these funds are used for nationally; such things as, it provides legal advocacy, engages in research, and AAUW serves as our advocate in Washington.  Our Manhattan association was able to bring Start/Smart workshops to train KSU women students on negotiating salaries and benefits with employers. As well as helping our KSU student association.

State Liaison: Nancy Bolson, our State Liaison, spoke about the upcoming Kansas AAUW State Conference set for April 22, 2017, “Rising AAUW Starts”.  This will be the 82nd State Conference. It will be held at Johnson County Community College, Overland Park, Kansas.  She also presented the dates of the National AAUW event to be held in Washington DC, June 14th-17th. For registration rates: Best Value = $549, Early Bird = $625, Regular = $675. For Best Value registration date ends, January 14th 2017. This year’s theme is “As We Take The Nation’s Capitol By Storm”.   Contact Nancy for further details.

Announcements: Pat Hudgins, reported on the Career Closet.  They are presently in need of smaller sizes. The Closet will be excepting items through January 6th, 2017.  Pat passed out information sheets for tax information and drop off location.

Programs: Tresa Landis and Connie Noble, co-vice presidents and program committee chairs, announced that the next meeting will be held at the Trinity Presbyterian Church at 6:00 p.m. The cost is $6. The program will be A Kansas STARBASE in Your Hometown, presented by Becky Catlin, Director, Manhattan Academy.

New ideas are coming through at our board meetings. Please feel free to come and sit in on these meetings. Keep up to date with your branch by reading the Newsletter. We welcome your thoughts and ideas.

That completes our business for the evening; now on with the sharing of Christmas.

Respectfully submitted,
Karen Tinkler, Acting Secretary
