New Manhattan Branch Notecards Showcase Seoyon Kim’s Artwork
The creative artwork by a young Manhattan artist, Seoyon Kim, is featured on the new notecards produced by the AAUW Manhattan Branch. Her award-winning artwork was the Best of Show Winner, K-2 age category, in the 2014 MLK (Martin Luther King, Jr.) Art Contest at the Manhattan Public Library. The colorful artwork shows women, girls and a few men of many nationalities and races holding hands around a big red heart. It was of great interest to the branch because it depicts the mission of AAUW — women and girls joining together to break through barriers and maximize their potential. The notecards were professionally printed with a high resolution, professional photograph of the image and the AAUW Manhattan Branch logo with artist credit on the back.
Seoyon is seven years old and a first grader at Amanda Arnold School in Manhattan. Her parents are Dr. Jinsoo and Eunyoung Kim. Dr. Kim is an Assistant Professor in the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Kansas State University. Seoyon’s parents encouraged her to enter the contest and enjoyed talking together about how to illustrate her creative idea that was inspired by a class photograph. Many of the people on the card are very important to her, such as her mom and dad, teachers, and special friends. Seoyon wrote an accompanying MLK essay that will be available on the branch website https://manhattan-ks.aauw.net/ or by contacting: manhattanksaauw@gmail.com.
The notecards were featured at the 2014 Kansas AAUW Annual Meeting on Saturday, April 12 and will be made available at the AAUW Midwest Regional Conference, June 13-14, 2014. They will be sold by the Manhattan Branch in packages of 8 cards (4.25 x 5.5 inches)/8 A2 envelopes for a donation of $10. To order contact Barbara Gatewood (785-539-8804, bgatewd@ksu.edu) or Claudia Jones (785-537-4442, interiors1@cox.net). (Please add $2 for shipping.) The funds raised from the sale of the notecards will be used for membership recruitment and development.
