BOARD MEETING MINUTES – October 9, 2017

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES (Draft)

MEMBERS PRESENT: Maurine Pruitt, Marilyn Bunyn, Tresa Landis, Connie Noble, Joan Strickler, Barbara Gatewood, Jean Lee, Karen Tinkler, and Shanutia Rippee

MEETING CALLED TO ORDER: Past President – Karen Tinkler

OFFICERS REPORTS:
Past President: Karen Tinkler – no report.

Co-Vice Presidents of Programs: Connie Noble and Tresa Landis Karen Hawes will be with us on October 9, 2017 covering Title X Family Planning Program: What You Need to Know. This will be at the First Congregational Church, 700 Poyntz Avenue at 6:00 pm with dinner.

Membership Vice-President: no report.

Secretary: Maurine Pruitt.  The minutes of last board meeting were approved as corrected

Treasurer: Shauntia Rippee presented the current Treasurer’s Report with an Ending Cash Balance on September 30, 2017 of $2,454.5.  Barbara had a bill for the Website Package from National for their website help for the year which is $ 119.88.  Connie moved and Jean seconded that we pay the bill.   Motion carried.

Director-at-Large: Marilyn Bunyan took member’s reservations; 17 members have made reservations for next Monday’s meeting.  A hard copy is sent to those who need this.  An announcement should be given at Monday’s meeting that you must respond to emails sent out for making reservations for the next Monday’s meeting.  Concern is about those who usually come but know they cannot – please let Marilyn know.  Marilyn will make up a list for reserva-tions to pass around on October 9. They will be signing up for the November 13 meeting.

Marilyn and Claudia looked up dates when people signed up for AAUW – they were looking up people for Honorary Life Member.  Two members were found and they will be on hold until they are accepted by National AAUW.

APPOINTED OFFICERS REPORTS:
AUW Funds: Joan Strickler will give a notice to Connie Noble to be sent to all members that asks for funds for AAUW. A “hat” will be passed at the meeting October 9, 2017 for this fundraising project. These funds will be used in fellowships, and grants for our members. It can also be used in developing public policy and legal advocacy for affecting women’s lives.

By-Laws: Nancy Bolsen and Marilyn Bunyan – no changes needed at this time

Public Policy: Jean Lee – no report.

League of Women Voters Coordinator: Jean Lee – reported the League of Women Voters’ Candidate Forum with board of education and city commission candidates will be Sunday, October 8, 2017 from 2:00 to 5:00pm at the Fire Station Headquarters at Kimball Ave. and Denison. This will be advertised mainly on Facebook. It will be on Facebook Live.  The League of Women Voters are also sponsoring a Legislative Outlook Public Meeting at Meadowlark Community Room at 2121 Meadowlark Road. This is on Saturday, November 4, 2017 from 9:00-11:00am with coffee and donuts being available. Those invited to speak are Senator Tom Hawk, District 22, Representatives Ron Highland, District 57, Susie Swanson, District 64, Sydney Carlin, District 66, and Tom Phillips, District 67.

State Board Liaison: Nancy Bolsen not here – Nancy sent National Information about Title IX to our emails.

Webmaster & Newsletter: Barbara Gatewood announced that the website is updated on most sections. Barbara thanked the National for all their help with the Website. She will show the next program speaker whenever you start using the Facebook page. The Facebook page – is converted from public group to a Facebook Page.  Branch is off of the address. The new address is AAUW Manhattan after the window is open, click on “Like.”

We have four members on Administration Status and four members on the Editor Status for the Facebook Page. The four administrators are Barbara Gatewood, Mary Stamey, Tresa Landis and Katie Kingery-Page. The editors are Connie Noble, Nancy Bolsen, Rachel Miles, and Annelise Nguyen. You will have to contact one of these persons if you want changes or additions on the Facebook Page.

Yearbook: Tresa Landis – 15 Yearbooks still need to be given out.   Connie will email a notice to all members.

COORDINATORS REPORTS:
Faculty Advisor for AAUW at Kansas State University:   a faculty advisor is no longer possible for an Independent Student Organization at K State. Read the following.

Rachel Miles had agreed to be the Faculty Advisor to the Student AAUW organization but because of a ruling on the K State Campus that Independent Student Organizations will no longer be covered with University’s insurance. These organizations cannot have faculty advisors because they are not covered with their activities with the Independent Student Organizations. As of October 2, 2017 this rule is effective.

It is pointed out that we will need to appoint a new advisor to the Student AAUW organization.  Carly Wright will serve as president of the Student AAUW organization.

Archives: Joan Strickler – thanks to Barbara and Marilyn for many items for the archives.

Branch Scholarship:  Claudia Jones – not present. The scholarships will go into effect in the spring.

National Fellowship and Grants: Rebecca Bahlmann – Mary and Barbara Gatewood will set up a meeting with Rebecca

University Representatives: Rachel Miles and Tara Fronce

Interest Groups: Joan Strickler reported that Great Decisions will meet the 2nd Thursday at 4:00 p.m. (note time change) to discuss a chapter from their book.

OLD BUSINESS:
Meeting for our new members –Karen suggested that we check about Little Apple Brewery. New members would not have to pay. Our Branch will pay for them. 4-6 pm is a possibility.  Karen will check with Little Apple Brewery. It is better if we can get this done by 1st part of November.   We still need someone to take charge of this gathering.

NEW BUSINESS:
Meeting for New Members
– person needs to volunteer to take charge of this meeting.We need to appoint a new advisor to the Student AAUW Organization.

ANNOUCEMENTS:
Our next Branch meeting is November 13, 2017 at the Kansas State University Student Union, in the Flint Hills Room, 7:00 pm.   Traci Scott will present Take Off Your Hoop Earrings Before You Put On Your Gas Mask: A Civilian Chick’s Survival Guide to a War Zone. This is also sponsored by the Women of K- State and the AAUW at K – State Student Organization. Refreshments and networking will happen after the program.

Our Next Board Meeting is Monday, November 6, 2017 at 4:00 pm at Vista Drive In.

AAUW BRANCH BOARD MEETING MINUTES
MAY 1, 2017
VISTA DRIVE-IN, 11:30 AM (LUNCH), 12:00 – 1:15 PM

PRESENT: Connie Noble, Claudia Jones, Joan Strickler, President Karen Tinkler, Maurine Pruitt, Chante Ruppee, Marilyn Bunyan, and Jean Lee.

MINUTES: Karen asked for correction to the minutes, director-at-large and date need to be corrected. The minutes were accepted as corrected.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Claudia Jones and Shauntia Rippee provided an April Treasurer’s report.

Cash Balance April 30, 2017             $1,607.27

The Dillons’ reward is greater now.  Caryl Wright wa given $365 to attend NCCWSL for travel expenses and other expenses as noted.  Dues will be coming in, and we will have money from the silent auction.  No bills were presented.

PROGRAM VICE-PRESIDENT REPORT: Connie Noble presented a great sign to be put up for the raffle tickets to Hair Design and Spa Basket gift cards at our upcoming Wrap-Up Celebration, May 8th.

STATE LIAISON REPORT: Nancy Bolsen left a report with Karen who reported that the OUTLOOK magazine had much about voting for National AAUW Officers.  The Number on back of magazine is the one to use when we present our vote. 2018 National dues are up $10. The OUTLOOK will be on line next year and not sent to each member by the postal service. Wording will be changed from Branch to Affiliate.  There was much discussion about this change. Nancy will not be on the board next year. It was suggested that Nancy possibly bring us up to date on the National from the OUTLOOK magazine as a member at large on the board. Next state conference is April 24, 2018 in Wichita, Kansas.

INTEREST GROUPS: Joan Strickler reported that Great Decisions will be on May 11, 2017 at Meadowlark. The chapter discussed is “Conflict and the South China Sea”.  Serendipity is May 23, at 11:30 at Meadowlark. Candy White is hostess.

PUBLIC POLICY: Jean Lee reported that League of Women Voters State Meeting was April 29 at the Ramada Inn at Topeka.  One speaker followed up on all that has happened in the legislature. Another speaker, Tiffany Anderson is the Superintendent from the Topeka school district. She was a great motivational speaker for those who are teachers and all others. The last speaker for Lunch with League spoke about Title X which provides for family planning was also really great. May 6th is the League of Women Voters’ Annual Meeting at Meadowlark.

MEMBERSHIP: Connie Noble and Maurine Pruitt no report.

NEWSLETTER: Barbara Gatewood no report.

OLD BUSINESS: Karen Tinkler, Nancy Bolsen, Tresa Landis, Barbara Gatewood and Tara Twiliger attended the state meeting at the Johnson County College. Tara did a great job explaining her trip to the east coast. Karen showed that we did get a Five Star Award for Overall Projects, Third Highest Giving Award, and Fifth Highest Per Capita Giving Award. Great job branch members!!! Karen also explained our International Program that we put on here in Manhattan in March.  It was noted that Johnson County College has a college student organization like we do.

NEW BUSINESS: Who is the AAUW K- State student president next year? Not known now. Could the student group have someone from Johnson County College student group come and talk to them about fundraising, etc? Could we get another faculty member to help with the K State student group? These items will be discussed at our summer retreat.

At our Annual Wrap-Up Celebration we need someone to talk about International Women’s Day – could Teresa Landis perhaps do this? Joan could talk about Great Decisions. Awards will be given to the Outstanding Member and the President’s Award. The 3rd scholarship winner may be at the meeting and will speak for a few minutes.  The Annual Wrap-Up Celebration Starts at 6:00 pm, May 8, 2017 at Meadowlark Community Room.  Separate checks should be made out to AAUW Manhattan Branch for the following;  Meal, Membership Dues, and Silent Auction Donation.

PRESENT: Karen Tinkler, Maurine Pruitt, Marilyn Bunyan, Connie Noble, Nancy Bolson, Claudia Jones, Barbara Gatewood, and Joan Strickler

MINUTES: The minutes from the January board meeting were read and approved.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Claudia Jones reported on the January 2017 Treasurer’s Report.

STATE LIAISON:  Nancy Bolson reported that he 2017 AAUW State Meeting will be held on April 22 at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park. Speakers for the meeting and other activities are in the planning stages. The National AAUW Convention will be held June 14th – 17th in Washington DC. K-State has a student applicant for the NCCWSL event to be held at the University of Maryland in June.  The State AAUW organization will pay the initial $750 for the enrollment.  There will be additional funds needed to be raised to pay for expenses.  If you care to make a donation for these expenses, Claudia will be glad to collect them.  You can also make donations at the April branch meeting or “earmark” your checks and send them to Claudia.

BYLAWS REPORT: Marilyn Bunyan reported that the bylaws have been completed and submitted to National.  They are now “in line” with the new wording, which was required by National.  There will be no more reports on this matter unless there is a change.

PUBLIC POLICY:  Maurine Pruitt reported that on February 16th at 11:30 a.m. the League of Women Voters will meet at the Little Apple Brewing Co.  The guest speaker will be Erin Easterbrook.  He will speak on school financing.  Reservations are not necessary.

VICE PRESIDENTS REPORT:  Connie Noble reported that at the February 13th meeting at the First Congregational Church, the program will be on Unconscious Bias.  It will be presented by Pat Hudgins and Mary Stamey.  There will be group participation.

In March we will be celebrating International Women’s Day.  Connie Noble, Tresa Landis, Mary Stamey , and Usha Redding are working on the events.  On March 1st. there will be a Proclamation presented at the City Commission meeting.  It will also be presented to the School Board.  On March 8th there will at a breakfast for the women leaders of our community, followed by an assembly in the Manhattan High School auditorium.  The culinary students will prepare the breakfast, and the assembly will highlight an international panel of area women.  In the evening, there will be a dinner at the Holiday Inn at the Campus open to the public at the cost of $20.  Following the dinner, the panel will be introduced.

INTEREST GROUPS:  Joan Strickler reported that Barbara (Barb) Rees is a new member who and has joined in with the Great Decisions group.

NEWSLETTER:  Barbara Gatewood passed out sheets containing the information that is needed for the next letter.  Please have information submitted to Barbara by February 15th.

OLD BUSINESS:  Claudia Jones reported that the STEM project for middle school students has gone up in price.  It was increased by $25. Present cost is $125 per student. The branch budgeted $300 for the STEM project.  Discussion followed.  Nancy Bolson moved and Joan Strickler seconded that the branch sponsor four students to attend the event this summer at a cost of $500.  The motion carried.  Members will be asked at the February and April branch meetings to donate to this project.  An additional $200 is needed.

There was discussion regarding the nomination of officers.  Maurine Pruitt graciously volunteered to run for branch secretary. T here are still positions to fill: director-at-large, president, and membership vice-president.  Discussion followed regarding how to make the membership vice-president’s job less challenging.

NEW BUSINESS:  There was a report on the Community Fair held February 4th at the Town Center Mall.  There were about twelve women who signed up to receive more information about AAUW.  Maurine will be sending them each a packet of information.  Board members plan to follow up with these prospective members as well as the ones who signed up at our November branch meeting.  Maurine will be donating a suitcase that the branch can put their “table information and handouts” in so that they can be moved around more easily.  Barbara Gatewood suggested that the branch purchase some “standup brochure holders” to place on our table. Nancy Bolsen moved and Maurine Pruitt seconded the motion that the branch obtain two brochure stands. The motion carried.  Barbara said that she would shop for and purchase such stands.

BRANCH MEETING MINUTES – December 12, 2016

AAUW MANHATTAN BRANCH MEETING MINUTES (Draft)

DECEMBER 12, 2016

Trinity Presbyterian Church on College Avenue, 6:00 p.m.

The president, Karen Tinkler, shared a letter with the membership that she received from Patricia Fae Ho, the Chairman of the board of AAUW. She wrote to thank the branch members for their efforts in helping to empower women. Seventeen trailblazing women came together 135 years ago to organize a community of women. They fought for and obtained a higher education. This became the basis of the AAUW.

Please read the upcoming Newsletter. It reflects on some of the milestones achieved by women over the past year. One achievement is that the first Native American Woman was confirmed as a US District Court judge. Also the first female and African American is now Chief Librarian of the Library of Congress. There will be twenty-one women serving in the U.S. Senate – the highest number ever. We’ve come a long was baby!

In January we will host our second AAUW sign up day for potential members.

Joan Strickler passed the basket around for the AAUW Funds that are collected once a year. She explained what these funds are used for nationally; such things as, it provides legal advocacy, engages in research, and AAUW serves as our advocate in Washington. Our Manhattan association was able to bring Start/Smart workshops to train KSU women students on negotiating salaries and benefits with employers. As well as helping our KSU student association.

Nancy Bolson, our State Liaison, spoke about the upcoming Kansas AAUW State Conference set for April 22, 2017, “Rising AAUW Starts”. This will be the 82nd State Conference. It will be held at Johnson County Community College, Overland Park, Kansas. She also presented the dates of the National AAUW event to be held in Washington DC, June 14th-17th. For registration rates: Best Value = $549, Early Bird = $625, Regular = $675. For Best Value registration date ends, January 14th 2017. This year’s theme is “As We Take The Nation’s Capitol By Storm”.   Contact Nancy for further details.

Pat Hudgins, reported on the Career Closet. They are presently in need of smaller sizes. The Closet will be excepting items through January 6th, 2017. Pat passed out information sheets for tax information and drop off location.

Tresa Landis and Connie Noble, Vice presidents and program committee, announced that the next meeting will be held at theTrinity Presbyterian Church at 6:00pm. The cost is $6. The program will be A Kansas STARBASE in Your Hometown, presented by Becky Catlin, Director, Manhattan Academy.

New ideas are coming through at our board meetings. Please feel free to come and sit in on these meetings. Keep up to date with your branch by reading the Newsletter. We welcome your thoughts and ideas.

November 7, 2016

PRESENT: Nancy Bolsen, Marilyn Bunyan, Barbara Gatewood, Claudia Jones, Jean Lee, Maurine Pruitt, Shauntia Rippee, Joan Strickler, and Karen Tinkler

 MINUTES: The minutes were approved as printed with minor corrections.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Claudia Jones presented the October 2016 treasure’s report. The beginning balance was $2,552.21; total income was $256.12; total expenses were $503.99 and the ending cash balance was $2.30434. Quarterly amount received from Dillions was $52.12. Claudia also reported that AAUW Manhattan had received $53,000+ for the Scholarship Fund from the Mavis Fletcher estate. She understood that more would be coming after the estate is settled. Discussion was held as to the need of fund raisers. The discussion was tabled until more was known about future expenses.

STATE LIAISON REPORT: The NCCWL applications are now available on line and will be submitted electronically. The State meeting on April 8 will be held at Johnson County Community College and hosted by the student organization there. The State board members will co-host.

PUBLIC POLICY: Any activity will depend on what happens November 8, election day. 719 including KSU were registered to vote prior to election day.  League of Women Voters do not have a regular meeting place, date or time, but are considering Little Apple Brewery.

MEMBERSHIP: There is no membership chair.  AAUW had representatives at an information table during the October 9 League of Women Voter’s (LWV) Candidate Forum.  Interested parties were able to pick up brochures about AAUW and visit with local AAUW members.  Anyone that expressed an interest in our local branch was asked to sign a form and they will receive more information about our local branch with a membership form.

Barbara had names that had shown an interest in our branch at the October 9 LWV Candidate Form and summer coffee.   Maurine volunteered to send out a membership packets to any who show interest in AAUW. This would contain information about AAUW, the Manhattan branch and membership forms.  It was suggested to invite individuals to Interest groups and branch meetings.  Do we need two membership VPs per year?  Further discussion tabled until January board meeting.

COMMUNICATIONS: Barbara was congratulated on an excellent November/December newsletter. She then passed a listing of items and who was to do the write-ups. Some board members volunteered to do some of the write-ups. Deadline is December 15. Barbara and Nancy have up-dated our website. The hat for AAUW Funds will be passed in December.

INTEREST GROUPS: No change. Need to invite new people to the meetings. We have lots of new young members who are still working.  The times for the interest groups meeting may be a problem.

VICE-PRESIDENT FOR PROGRAMS REPORT: Kelly Sartorius, Adjunct Lecturer, College of Liberal Arts & Science. University of Kansas will be the program for Nov.14 branch meeting.  Her topic will how AAUW has influenced Women’s rolls in Higher Education.  Thirteen have made reservations for the November 14 meeting at KSU. Marilyn has 6 more names to submit.  Will we need $5.00 per attendee at the December meeting?

OLD BUSINESS: A short discussion was held concerning the need for two coffees to meet those interested in AAUW. Tabled for further discussion at a future board meeting.
